BIGGEST EVER INTERNATIONAL TEAM WIN FOR GAVIN

Gavin left for Switzerland on Friday 10th June for the last time this season, to compete in the Swiss Cup in Veyrier. The tournament had been organised jointly by CTT Veyrier, CTT ZZ-Lancy and CTT UGS-Chênois table tennis club.

The tournament starts in the last 16 qualifying stages and has a straight knockout system. The final round is from the Quarter final onwards and UGS-Chênois were in the mix for the title from the start of the day.

The UGS-Chênois team consisted of Gavin Rumgay, Nicholas Champod, Daniel Memmi, Daniel Suvorin, Remi Bartolomeo and Loic Stoll.

The gold medal match was hotly contested with the final scoreline 8-7 to UGS- Chênois, with Gavin remaining unbeaten in the singles throughout the day, winning 6/6 matches and only conceding one doubles match in the semi final match up. Fresh back from his World Championship success, it was clear that he was on form to lead his team to Gold.

Incredibly, UGS came back from a 7 matches to 5 deficit to record the win. All 3 of these matches were huge unexpected wins also. Daniel Suvorin came back from 10/7 down in the 5th to win 12/10 to bring it back to 6/7. Furthermore, Loïc Stoll put on a chopping masterclass to beat the left handed veteran Santomauro 11/9 in the 4th after the veteran was pulled up for a fault serve on match point.

The match hinged on a pulsating encounter between Remi & David Baudrillard. The later had never lost to Remi before. Remi lost the first set but fought back to win 3/1 for a famous victory!

This result was the icing on the cake for Gavin after a tremendous season in Switzerland this year. He said that, "This result for the team is unbelievable. Last year we lost out in the Quarter finals and this year we managed to take the Gold after being big underdogs", he went on to say, "this result emphasises the progress our team has made, we are a close knit group and this result was a team effort, it was a nice little bonus to add another 6/6 individual wins to the scoreboard".

Gavin also explained that winning titles such as the British League were good but being one of the top teams meant it was easy to win the title. In contrast, in the Swiss Cup UGS were massive underdogs which made the win so special!

Gavin's success in Switzerland is evident by topping the averages for the 2016/2017 season. Gavin will look to start the new 2017/2018 season with the same success and GR Racket Sports looks forward to the new impending season ahead.

Gavin will now head back to London rejuvenated as the weeks start to tick down to the Platinum Australia Open in early July, but for now it is back to the tennis courts, badminton courts and golf courses to be with his clients.
